• Narain Dutt Tiwari: Governor of Andhra Pradesh has resigned from the office citing “health grounds”. Earlier a sex scandal involving him rocked the nation.
• Liu Xiaobo: China’s most prominent dissident, was jailed for 11 years for campaigning for political freedoms.
• Pope Benedict: The Pope was in news as a woman jumped over barricade and dragged him to the floor at the start of his Christmas Eve mass.
• Akmal Shaikh: Pakistan born British who became the first European to be executed by China in 50 years. He was arrested in 2007 for carrying four kg of heroin. Britain reacted with fury on it.
• Raghubir Yadav: Bollywood actor and theatre artiste is untraceable for the past two months.
• R Ravimohan: The man credited with building the country’s largest credit rating agency CRISIL, passed away.
• Sushil Ghale: Shooter who has broken the national record in the Big Bore 300m peep sight free rifle event in the 53rd National Shooting Championship which is going on in Mhow (M.P.)
• ESL Narasimhan: Governor of Chhattisgarh has taken additional charge of Andhra Pradesh, after the resignation of N D Tiwari.
• Billy Arjan Singh: Renowned wildlife conservationist and prolific wildlife author died at the age of 92.
• Magnus Carlsen: Norwegian teenager has become the youngest person ever to be ranked world number one in Chess as per the statistics of FIDE.
• Former BJP leader Kalyan Singh has floated a new political party “Jan Kranti Party”.
• Justine Henin: Former world no. 1 tennis player has announced her comeback to tennis again.
• Britain’s Prime Minister Gordan Brown has been voted “the worst-dressed man of the year” by GQ magazine.
• Reena Kaushal: Has become the first Indian woman to reach South Pole.
• Sarah Elzanowski: Has won the title of “Miss Tourism International 2009”. She is from Germany.

• Dabi-Nayagaon (Kota): The place in Rajasthan was in news as a bridge over Chambal River has collapsed killing many people.
• Mayon Volcano: Volcano in Philippines is showing signs of explosive eruption in future.
• Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC): was in news as a fire broke out in a chemical lab.
• Firozeshah Kotla: The cricket stadium in New Delhi was in news as the ODI between India and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to dangerous pitch.
• First “Sanskrit Kumbh”: is going to be held in Prayag to mark the completion of 200 years of Sanskrit Paathshala in the state Dharmagyanopdesha Sanskrit Mahavidyala which was set up in 1810.
• Rose Rayhaan: The hotel which was inaugurated in Dubai recently, has been declared as the tallest hotel in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Economy/Financial development/Important data:
• Asian Development Bank raised its India’s Growth forecast to 7%.
• India’s share in global Foreign Direct Investment has almost doubled to 2.45% in 2008 compared to the previous year as per the figures published by the UNCTAD World Investment Report (WIR) 2009.
• Exxon Mobil: The biggest US oil company agreed to buy XTO Energy for $31 billion.
• The government has signed an agreement with the World Bank for renovation and modernization of 640 mw of coal-fired power plants. $180 million will be provided by the IBRD (World Bank).
• BRIC Nations: Consist of economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China.
• Foreign Exchange reserves fall by $1.6 billion to touch $285.7 billion level during the week ended on December 11, 2009.
• CITIGROUP reached an accord with the Treasury Department and regulators to repay $20 billion of the bailout it received from US taxpayers.
• India and Japan signed two agreements for setting up the ambitious Rs. 360000 crore Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project and developing eco-cities around it.
• India has retained its numero uno position in world milk production and is estimated to have produced 110 million tones of milk in 2008-09 as per the recently published statistics of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)
• Goods and Service Tax: The government is making attempts to roll out a comprehensive goods and services tax (GST) from April 1, 2010. (The Goods and Services Tax is a tax we have to pay every time we buy goods or services. In this system, the consumer pays the final tax but an efficient input tax credit system ensures that there is no cascading of taxes-tax on tax paid on inputs that go into manufacture of goods).
• The exports in November 2009 were $13.2 billion against $ 11.2 billion in November 2008 indicating a growth of 18.2% in November 2009.
• India’s infrastructure sector expanded by 5.3% in November 2009.
• Gems & Jewellery exports have grown by about 55% at $2.1 billion in November 2009 compared with the same period last year.
• India has entered into a pact with three major economies – Russia, Malaysia and Brazil – to ensure mutual flow of information pertaining to money laundering and terror funding.
• After 13 consecutive months of sliding, India’s exports rose 18.2% in November to $13.2 billion whereas imports remained in the negative zone declining by 2.6% to $22.88 billion.
• From April to November exports were lower by 22.3% at $104.2 billion from a year ago period.
• PMEAC has predicted that economy would grow between 7% and 7.5% in 2009-10; it would grow by 8% in 2010-11.
• The government has approved 9 foreign direct investment (FDI) proposals worth Rs. 523.7 crore, including a Rs. 326 crore proposal from Japanese conglomerate Mitsui.
• India’s total external debt rose by 8.1% to $242.8 billion at the end of September 2009 from $224.6 billion at March-end 2009.
• India’s current account deficit remained flat at $12.6 billion during the quarter ended September 2009; the trade deficit remained at $32.2 billion for the same period.
• Gold imports dipped by nearly 18% to 28 tonne in November 2009 against the same month last year.
• For the first time in its 800-year history, Cambridge University is planning to issue bonds to raise money from the markets. The university is considering raising $400 million to fund two of its capital projects.
• Recent CSO figures for the last five year reveal that Bihar is the second fastest growing state in India. The GDP growth rate was 11.03% for the period between 2004-05 and 2008-09 for Bihar. Gujarat with a GDP growth rate of 11.05% was the fastest growing state during the period.
• The country’s mineral production in value terms grew by 8.25% to Rs. 8817 crore in October 2009 compared to September 2009. While the coal sector’s contribution was highest, iron was second.
• The fiscal deficit of the country is estimated to be 6.8% in 2009-10, against 6.2% in the previous fiscal, informed by the Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

• “Five Point someone”: A book written by Chetan Bhagat. The book was in the news as Bhagat claimed that the famous Aamir Khan Starter movie “3 Idiots” is based on it.

Sports:
• Jaypee Cup Syed Modi Memorial India Grand Prix Badminton Tournament: Held in Lucknow. Saina Nehwal won the women’s title whereas Chetan Anand claimed men’s title.
• Aditya Mehta: The 24 year old from Mumbai won the “VIP Matrix All India Invitational Snooker Tournament” in Chennai.
• Spaniard Rafael Nadal’s victory over Roger Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon’s men’s final has been voted by the readers of “The Telegraph” as the sporting moment of the decade.
• US mobile phone giant AT & T became the latest sponsor to end sponsorship agreement with the golfer Tiger Woods.
• India sent its first sports team to Pakistan in more than a year as a seven member boxing team left for the Karachi to participate in an international tournament.
• “Vishwarupa Tubes National Grass court Tennis Championship”: Held at Kolkata, Ashutosh Singh and Ankita Raina claimed the men’s and women’s title respectively.
• World Teams Chess Championship: Going on in Bursa (Turkey), India is also participating.
• The International Olympic Committee has suspended Kuwait’s national Olympic committee because of the alleged political interference by the government.
• East Bengal: Won the Federation Cup Football which was held in Guwahati.
• Churchill Brother’s players were in news for allegedly misbehaving with an airhostess on a Spice Jet plane (Churchill Brother is a football club in India).

Awards:
• Roger Federer has been named International Tennis Federation (ITF) champion for the fifth time, Serena Williams take the women’s award for the second time.
• The Indian Army Team has bagged the first prize in the “International Humanitarian Law Competition” organized in Switzerland.
• Saina Nehwal: Badminton player was awarded “IBN Indian of the Year Award” in New Delhi by PM Shri Man Mohan Singh.
• Shrawan Kumar: Allahabad born scientist of Indian origin has been given the highest civilian award of Canada “The Order of Canada”, for his three decades of pioneering research on workplace injury and the spine at the University of Alberta.
• Mota Singh: is the UK, s first Sikh and Asian judge, he has been knighted by the British Queen.
• “ICC’s Hall of Fame”: Former Australian captain Steve Waugh, along with four others, was inducted in the ICC’s Hall of Fame.

Corporates:
• As per the list released by the Forbes of “Eight Indian-Flavored CEOs” PEPSICO Chief Executive Indira Nooyi is on the top of the list.

Other Important points:
• Ram Pradhan-V Balachandran Committee Report: Associated with 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.
• The Sunday Telegraph has placed Australian Captain Rickey Ponting as the worst-behaved player to play for the country in the last 20 years.
• Congress Party: Celebrated its 125th Foundation Day.
• As per the US magazine “Entertainment Weekly” Harry Potter topped the list of top-100 list of “Greatest Entertainers of The Decade”.
• India’s Nobel Prize winner Mother Teresa will be honored on a US postage stamp on her birth centenary.
• Hollywood blockbuster “Avatar” becomes the fastest movie ever to rake in $1 billion, faster than any other movie in the history. James Cameron is the director of this blockbuster movie.
• The longest annular solar eclipse of the third millennium will occur on January 15. There won’t be an annular solar eclipse longer than this one till 3043.
